This is officially Week 6 in the college football season. We’ve just hit October, but after Saturday, teams that haven’t had their off weeks yet will be halfway through the regular season.

We’ll have our first batch of teams clinch bowl berths this weekend, which is a wild thought. Is it just me, or does this season seem to be absolutely flying by?

It’s been a fun year so far where anyone can lose on any given weekend and there doesn’t appear to be a clear No. 1 team (though Georgia deserves that top spot as long as it keeps winning).

What will happen in an intriguing Week 6? Let’s dive into your questions for this week’s Mailbag, shall we?

Miles:

Georgia is a 14.5-point favorite over Kentucky in Athens this weekend. Alabama is a 1.5-point favorite at Texas A&M on Saturday. Which top SEC team is more likely to lose?

I think the line for Georgia is a bit disrespectful to Kentucky, but the game is in Athens and Sanford Stadium will be rocking. I’d take the Wildcats to keep it within 2 touchdowns, but Georgia should be able to win on its home turf.

Alabama is certainly more in danger of losing. The Vegas lines reflect that and it’s a road game for the Crimson Tide. Their last trip to Kyle Field (in 2021) ended with the No. 1 Tide losing 41-38.

Both the Aggies and the Tide are 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play. Thus, the lead in the SEC West is on the line. It should be an intense game. Even without QB Conner Weigman, Bobby Petrino has his A&M offense humming along.

I believe both Alabama and Georgia will win this weekend, but Alabama will have to fight to the very end to avoid a second-straight loss in College Station. The Tide are officially on upset alert.

Jacob:

We’re almost at the halfway point of the season. What’s your pick for the worst team in the Power 5?

Let’s start with Virginia. The Cavaliers are 0-5 – the only Power 5 team yet to record a victory on the season. They’ve been outscored 178-107 through those 5 games.

The other candidate is Stanford in the Pac-12. The Cardinal are 1-4 with a loss to FCS Sacramento State on their résumé. Their only win came in Week 1 against a not-so-great Hawaii squad.

Stanford has only managed 96 points offensively this year, making it 1 of 4 Power 5 teams (along with Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Arizona State) to not have 100 points so far this year (even Brian Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes have managed to reach 100 points).

But the Cardinal play in a tough Pac-12 conference. The Cavaliers play in a not-as-top-heavy ACC. Thus, I’m going with Virginia as my answer here. The Hoos play FCS William & Mary this weekend. We’ll see if they can improve to 1-5 on Saturday. I have my doubts.

Lyle:

If you had to bet on a Pac-12 champion today, who are you taking to come out of that top-heavy conference?

The Pac-12 has not been better in recent memory, which is sad, as the league will fall apart next year due to realignment. But currently, there are 6 Pac-12 teams in the top 20 (No. 7 Washington, No. 8 Oregon, No. 9 USC, No. 13 Washington State, No. 15 Oregon State and No. 18 Utah).

That’s impressive.

Washington State and Oregon State would love to be the last conference champion before they’re left behind to figure out their uncertain futures. But before I make a title pick, let’s look at the odds (via DraftKings Sportsbook):

  • Oregon: +220
  • Washington: +220
  • USC: +240
  • Washington State: +1300
  • Utah: +1300
  • Oregon State: +1300

Both Oregon and Washington are off this week as they prepare for next weekend’s matchup in Seattle.

Right now, I’m leaning toward picking the Huskies to win the league, since they get to host the Ducks. My guess is that those 2 would meet up again in the Pac-12 title game.

But if you want to take one of those second-tier teams at better odds, I’d go with Wazzu. I like what Jake Dickert has built up in Pullman.

@Dobbe8:

It’s not crazy to say Mizzou has the SEC’s top-2 Heisman Trophy contenders right now with Brady Cook and Luther Burden, right? Right?

I think that’s entirely fair to say right now. Of course, I wouldn’t go as far as to say either of them are atop the Heisman rankings, as I think there are a handful of Pac-12 QBs currently leading that race.

But Burden is certainly in the driver’s seat for the Biletnikoff Award at the moment. He has an SEC-best 43 catches for an SEC-best 644 yards and 5 touchdowns (tied for 4th in the SEC) through 5 games and has been absolutely electric with the ball in his hands.

Cook has completed 74.5% of his passes (2nd in SEC) for 1,468 yards (4th) and 11 touchdowns (tied for 2nd). But what stands out about him is he hasn’t thrown an interception like the other QBs atop the SEC rankings.

As we all know, Heismans aren’t won in September. The Tigers’ schedule gets much harder starting this weekend against LSU. Do I expect Cook and Burden to receive invites to New York in December? Probably not.

But if they can keep playing well, Mizzou will prove the doubters who voted for the Tigers to finish 6th in the SEC East wrong.
