Week 1 was an exciting one across the college football universe, even if there weren’t as many big-time games as we’ve seen in previous opening weeks.

Week 2, though … Week 2 promises to be even better. We have Alabama-Texas. We have Ole Miss-Tulane. Notre Dame-NC State. Colorado-Nebraska. Texas A&M-Miami.

Buckle up, folks, it’s going to be another incredible Saturday of college football. Then the NFL season begins on Sunday to make the weekend even better!

Enjoy the football and enjoy this week’s SDS Mailbag questions:

Robert:

LSU fell to Florida State. Florida laid an egg at Utah. Clemson was embarrassed at Duke. South Carolina got schooled by North Carolina. Which team was the most disappointing in Week 1?

Yes, it was a bad weekend for the SEC. LSU, South Carolina and Florida were all sloppy and disappointing. The Florida and South Carolina offensive lines need to improve a ton and improve in a hurry.

But at the risk of being called an SEC homer (wouldn’t be the first time), Clemson was the most disappointing team. I can’t believe Dabo Swinney said on Thursday that if the Clemson offense plays the way it did at Duke moving forward, the Tigers “won’t lose another game.”

Really, Dabo?

The Tigers only scored 7 points. I’ll go out on a limb and say they won’t win many games with that point total. They also won’t win many games with the combination of kicking struggles and red-zone turnovers we saw on Monday night.

I was incredibly disappointed in Clemson. It made me glad I didn’t pick the Tigers to make the College Football Playoff. (I did pick LSU, though, which I’m souring on already.)

Clemson has some major issues to address. If Swinney doesn’t get this team back on track soon, it could be a long season.

Devin:

Are you buying the hype on Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes after the exciting win on Saturday?

If you thought Saturday’s thrilling win over last year’s national runner-up TCU was exciting, just wait until you see the atmosphere at Folsom Field in Boulder this weekend.

I’m anticipating the biggest Colorado crowd in more than a decade. It’s going to be rowdy when Matt Rhule and the Nebraska Cornhuskers come to town for Deion Sanders’ home debut as the Buffs’ head coach.

Yeah, that game kicks off at 10 a.m. local time, which is a bit ridiculous, but there will be plenty of time for Colorado fans to party after they improve to 2-0.

I’m picking Coach Prime and the Buffs to win Saturday and beat Colorado State in Week 3 before suffering their first losses at Oregon in Week 4 and at home against USC in Week 5.

However, those will only be slight speed bumps. I’ll adjust my expectations for Colorado to 7-5 for the season, with losses to Oregon, USC, UCLA, Oregon State and Utah.

Joe:

Who do you like in the Alabama-Texas game this weekend?

I was going to pick Texas to win outright, but then I watched Jalen Milroe torch a decent Middle Tennessee team that beat Miami last year. Meanwhile, Quinn Ewers didn’t have an elite outing against Rice.

Alabama is currently favored by 7 points. While I do like the Tide to win, that’s a big number. Last year’s game was decided by 1 point, and that was with Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. suiting up for Alabama.

The atmosphere in Bryant-Denny Stadium will be electric, Milroe and the Tide running game will keep them competitive. Texas has plenty of talent, but at the end of the day, the Tide will win by 3-4 points.

I’ll make 24-20 my official projection for this game. Alabama wins, but doesn’t cover. The Tide score a victory that will help their College Football Playoff résumé in a huge way. Can’t wait to watch that game!

@Dobbe8:

What would you do if you were Caleb Williams? Enter the 2024 NFL Draft to be the No. 1 pick or wait for 2025 (or 2026)?

I know that the NIL rules in college football make it more enticing for players to stick around, but if you can be the No. 1 pick in the draft, you have to do it. Yes, you’ll end up with one of the worst teams in the league 90% of the time (barring a trade for the No. 1 pick), but you can’t pass up that kind of money, if you ask me.

Yes, Williams is making a ton of NIL money. But if you go to the NFL and play well, you can make even more money with media partnerships and brand ambassadorships, etc. Then you also get a massive contract to play the game itself, which you don’t currently get in college.

Joe Burrow went to the Cincinnati Bengals and had them in the Super Bowl by his second year. Peyton Manning went to the Indianapolis Colts and won a Super Bowl there. Trevor Lawrence has the Jacksonville Jaguars in a good spot as a perennial playoff contender.

So, yes, the Arizona Cardinals are bad now, but if they land the No. 1 pick, there’s no reason to think Williams can’t compete there. The right move for him is probably to go pro after this year. If he wins the Heisman Trophy again this year, there won’t be much left for him to accomplish in the college ranks.
