The SEC lost the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, with the final tally 6-4 in the Big 12’s favor.

However, the SEC teams that did win did so in style, highlighted by No. 8 Kentucky’s victory over No. 9 Kansas. It was announced Saturday that the challenge was extended six years, so we can expect plenty more exciting action between these two conferences.

For now, though, it’s back to SEC play, and it’s time to take a look at the teams and players that are ice cold, heating up and on fire. Here’s who’s hot and who’s not heading into February:

Ice cold

Team: Mizzou

Yikes. Missouri held a 14-point lead over LSU with just over two minutes left in Columbia on Saturday night, seemingly cruising to one of the most surprising victories of the SEC season.

Cue the Lee Corso voice — not so fast, my friend. The Tigers collapsed late, looking baffled by the full-court press as they allowed LSU to tie the game and send it into overtime. In overtime, Will Wade’s squad took over, winning by six points.

That’s a 20-point swing from where the game was with two minutes left. Add in a road loss at Arkansas earlier in the week (a game where they had a halftime lead) and it’s a rough time to be a Mizzou fan right now.

Player: Admiral Schofield, G/F, Tennessee

I know, I know. Schofield is still one of the best players in the SEC — no one is denying that. However, he has been in a bit of an uncharacteristic slump (by his standards) lately.

In a narrow win over Vanderbilt and a big victory against West Virginia this week, Schofield scored a total of 20 points on a combined 7-of-25 shooting (1-for-11 from 3-point range). He’s still making big plays that are helping the Vols win, but this isn’t the Schofield we’ve come to know the past couple of years.

He’ll shoot his way out of the slump eventually, and that’s bad news for the teams that have to face the Vols this week — South Carolina and Texas A&M.

Heating up

Team: Mississippi State

A 21-point loss at Kentucky on Tuesday wasn’t a great start to the week, but the Wildcats have been dominant lately (see below). The real barometer for the Bulldogs came on Saturday night, when they hosted No. 16 Auburn.

The Bulldogs passed the test, winning both halves to pick up a 92-84 victory. Road trips to Alabama and Ole Miss won’t be easy this week, but those are exactly the kinds of games Mississippi State must win to take the next step as a program.

Player: Jordan Geist, G, Mizzou

Yes, his team is struggling in a big way, but Geist has been incredible this year. In fact, he may just be the most underrated player in the SEC.

In the late collapse against LSU on Saturday, he scored a game-high 25 points and also snagged 11 rebounds — no easy task for a 6-2 guard. He’s the heart and soul of the Mizzou squad, and if he could get some more consistent help, the Tigers could start to pull off some impressive victories.

For now, though, he’ll have to toil away in relative obscurity, and with a road trip to Auburn this week, things could get worse for Mizzou before they get better.

On fire

Team: Kentucky

The Wildcats lost their SEC opener at Alabama, but since then, they’ve looked like one of the best teams in the country. They’ve rattled off six consecutive wins and beat a ranked Kansas team by 8 on Saturday night.

PJ Washington and Reid Travis are starting to dominate in the post, and Ashton Hagans continues to be one of the best point guards in the country. With trips to Vanderbilt and Florida coming up this week, things should continue to improve for John Calipari’s squad.

Player: Skylar Mays, G, LSU

Mays proved to be a one-man comeback on Saturday night at Mizzou, going on a 9-0 run all by himself with his Tigers down by 14 points (see above). This incredible stretch of basketball, which you can see below, helped LSU force overtime and eventually win the game:

Mays finished with a team-high 24 points. Coming off a 20-point effort in a win over Georgia earlier in the week, the junior guard is coming alive as of late.

We’ll see if he can keep it going at Texas A&M and at home against Arkansas this coming week.
