SEC bowl projections after Week 8
With only 3 SEC games on Saturday and only one top-25 upset (and that was just SMU losing), the bowl projection landscape was quite still over the weekend.
We still think the SEC will get 4 teams into the New Year’s Day 6 bowls: Alabama into the College Football Playoff semifinals, plus Florida, Texas A&M and Georgia making major bowls as well.
Our only real difference this week is that South Carolina is out — after that putrid defensive showing against Ole Miss, the Gamecocks look unlikely to win another game. Even in a season where the usual NCAA bowl eligibility requirements have been waived, there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
Also, Mississippi is matched up against Iowa State in the Liberty because that game is supposed to be SEC vs. Big 12, but in truth we’d rather see a team like Memphis. It would make perfect geographic sense, Ole Miss vs. Memphis has a long history — and besides, 2020 has been a rough year all the way around, so can we please have a 68-63 bowl game? We deserve one, right?
Now let’s look at this week’s projections:
Scrapping the bottom of the barrel if UT goes to a bowl game at 3-7.
WHY IS TENNESSEE STILL IN A BOWL?
NCAA said anyone with a pulse, regardless of record, is bowl eligible. Us UF fans are looking at FSU and shaking our heads.
For all practical purposes, you’re facing a POS BIG?? team. Tennessee will obliterate ioWAH something like 47-7.
Missouri in the Outback bowl is a big reach
I am guessing Missouri is going to be 5-5 or 6-4 before bowl game. Will that not be good enough for Missouri to go there?
Usually the Outback bowl is used for a higher tier team that wasnt good enough for an NY6/Citrus Bowl. Arkansas is probably a better pick at this point.
So when Ole Miss beats LSU off the field in Baton Rouge , you still Have the Rebels in the Liberty Bowl??
Realize that the Razorbacks are razor thin depth wise (no pun intended) and that their best two cover corners that could have played against the gators are now : 1) starting for an NFL team after forgoing his senior season and 2) opting out this season to prepare for the NFL draft. I sincerely doubt that it would have changed the final outcome but would have made it much more competitive with both in the line up along with Catalon
I think most of the ones at the top are pretty realistic. Despite how much A&M and Florida fans want to make the CFP, odds are it will end up something like this. A&M and UF in a NY6 bowl, Bama in the playoffs with 4 teams from 4 different conferences, I think the CPC will jump at the opportunity to make it diverse.
Agree completely, as much as I’d like to see us in the playoff. We won’t since a few other school have some cake walks unless some upsets start happening.
Yep. I see the desire by many to bring “diversity” to the college football playoffs by putting teams that don’t deserve it in the top 4 spots. If they had their way, it would be Oregon, Cincinnati, ND and BYU. That would be diverse for sure and an absolute bunch of shyt.
While I don’t think that will happen, I do think there may be a strong push to get one of these cinderellas into the PO.
Agreed with the BS part of that, but you also have to think about the money. If they can include a whole other fan base or conference, ratings go up and money comes in. It’s performance and politics. But I will say, for the most part they’ve done a pretty good job, some #4 spots could be moved around across the years, but overall they’ve selected good teams. (even if Bama and Clem have just destroyed everyone)
If Clemson beats ND they’re both getting in
