What a regular season of college football!

Rivalry Week did not disappoint, though the College Football Playoff scenarios only seem more complicated with just 1 more week of games to work off. Let’s dive in.

Right now, my CFP is the following: Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, Florida State, in that order. Three spots seem to be filled as of now, simply awaiting a team: Michigan (assuming the Wolverines take care of business against Iowa), the winner of the Pac-12 (Washington or Oregon) and the winner of the SEC between Georgia and Alabama.

But as you know, things can get tricky. There are still 8 teams in the running for the 4-team field.

If Alabama beats Georgia, and Florida State beats Louisville with the remainder of the spots filled as displayed above, who makes it in? I lean Georgia, but it’s a moot point to my projections anyway considering I have the Bulldogs winning the SEC yet again.

Then there are the Texas Longhorns, who are now massive Louisville and Georgia fans. If the Bulldogs beat Alabama, and Louisville upsets the Seminoles, that No. 4 spot may belong to the Longhorns should they take care of business against Oklahoma State. Ohio State may have a gripe in that scenario, but ultimately Texas would have a conference title and Ohio State would not. That’s a tough call.

Let’s shift gears to the remainder of the SEC. Most important, Florida, Mississippi State and South Carolina were unable to score wins against their respective ranked opponents in Week 13 and will all miss out on a bowl bid. Florida had the best chance of the 3 but couldn’t capitalize after a so-so first half lead gave way in the final 30 minutes.

That means 9 SEC teams will go bowling this season. Because the Orange Bowl is contractually obligated to feature the next best ACC team if one cracks the Playoff, Ole Miss is still in the Citrus Bowl against Iowa. The Rebels likely make a NY6 bowl if Florida State misses out on the CFP.

Until next week, college football.
