SEC expected to release injury reports during 2024 season, per report
Injury reports are likely coming to the SEC for the 2024 college football season.
On Tuesday, Alex Scarborough and John Talty of CBS Sports shared, per sources, that the conference is “moving toward a mandatory injury report” for the upcoming football season. The move is not yet officially approved, but details are reportedly “close to being finalized” ahead of Week 1.
With increasing legal sports betting in the United States, there have been pushes for mandatory injury reports in college sports. The Big Ten was the first conference to introduce official college football injury reports, which began in the 2023 season. B1G gameday reports designated a team’s injured players as “questionable” or “out.”

The topic came up in May at the SEC spring meetings. At that time, Greg Sankey indicated that the conference was actively considering injury reports and would continue discussions.
“We are going to have a discussion about student-athlete availability reporting,” Sankey said. “Members of our staff have been working on this project, really since last summer. I referenced some considerations that we would have.”
In September 2023, Nick Saban expressed reservations with mandatory injury reports, noting the possibility of creating a disadvantage by revealing a player’s status.
“I respect the fact the media has a job to do and wants to get as much information as they can,” Saban said. “We try to do that on a timely basis, but we also don’t want to create a disadvantage to ourselves when a situation with players is relatively unknown or day-to-day and we don’t know how they’re going to be by gametime.
“It’s a tough situation to be in.”
The CBS Sports report notes that Florida and LSU released injury reports last season. The SEC’s 2024 football season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29, when Arkansas hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7:30 p.m., ESPNU) and Mizzou hosts Murray State (8 p.m., SEC Network).
