The regular season has come to a close, and we now know what the bracket will look like for next week’s SEC Tournament in Nashville.

With No. 1 seed LSU caught up in the FBI scandal in college basketball, it’ll be interesting to see if the Tigers can keep winning. If not, No. 2 seed Kentucky and No. 3 Tennessee are poised to cut down the nets.

However, as you can see below, No. 5 seed Auburn enters the tourney on a hot streak, so we’ll see if they can make it to the final. Meanwhile, other teams need a win or two to cement their NCAA Tournament status.

With so much at stake over the next few days, here’s who’s hot and who’s not as the SEC Tournament draws near:

Ice Cold

Team: Alabama

The Tide are slipping at the worst possible time. At one point, they were considered to be safely in the field of 68 teams for the NCAA Tournament, but that has changed.

Entering the SEC Tournament, Alabama is on a 4-game losing streak, and fans are calling for coach Avery Johnson to lose his job. At 17-14, this team now likely needs at least 2 wins in the conference tourney to get back on the bubble, so we’ll see what happens.

Their first test won’t be easy, as they have to take on a talented Ole Miss squad on Thursday afternoon.

Player: Lamonte Turner, G, Tennessee

In his past three games, Turner has played a total of 94 minutes and has scored only 11 points on 5-of-24 shooting (1-for-15 from 3-point range). He’s literally shooting the Vols out of games, and his 1-for-8 mark from long range against Auburn on Saturday contributed to the loss.

Even coach Rick Barnes thinks Turner is forcing things, so he’s going to need to pick his spots when the Vols roll into Nashville next week. If he can’t heat up a little bit from the floor, he’s going to need to find other ways to impact games.

Heating Up

Team: South Carolina

The Gamecocks entered the week on a 3-game losing streak, but managed to overcome that and clinch the No. 4 seed (and the double-bye that comes with it) by beating Texas A&M and Georgia.

I’ve been hard on South Carolina big man Chris Silva this year, but he rose to the occasion this week, scoring 22 points and grabbing 17 rebounds against the Aggies and following that up with a 24-point, 10-rebound performance against the Bulldogs.

With LSU embroiled in controversy, the Gamecocks have a decent chance to make it to the SEC Tournament final. It won’t be easy, but this team has proved its grit and toughness time and time again this season.

Player: Tyler Herro, G, Kentucky

The freshman from Milwaukee had only 6 points in Kentucky’s loss to Tennessee last weekend. Since then, he’s turned things around — even if coach John Calipari doesn’t think he’s playing great defense.

Against Ole Miss, he had 20 points and 5 rebounds, following that up with 16 points and 6 boards against Florida on Saturday. If he gets hot, he can carry the Wildcats’ offense. Will he be able to hold up for three games in three days, though? We’ll find out next week.

On Fire

Team: Auburn

The Tigers have the second-longest winning streak in the SEC at 4 games (behind only LSU’s 5-game streak), but Auburn has much less drama surrounding the program than LSU these days. Yes, Auburn was caught up in the FBI scandal before the season, but right now, it’s LSU coach Will Wade and talented G Javonte Smart who are sitting out while Auburn is basically at full strength.

The Tigers knocked off Tennessee on Saturday, and that’s a win that should give them a lot of confidence heading into Nashville. With the way they shoot 3s, they’ll be a tough out for anyone.

And, since they got the No. 5 seed, they’ll only have to play Kentucky or Tennessee, not both. That sets up for an interesting route to a potential SEC Tournament title game appearance.

Player: Daniel Gafford, F/C, Arkansas

With the No. 9 seed in the SEC Tournament on the line on Saturday against Alabama, Gafford was absolutely brilliant. In 30 minutes of action, he scored 29 points and snagged a season-high 16 rebounds to lead the Razorbacks to victory.

That came after Gafford scored 20 points against Vanderbilt earlier in the week. The Razorbacks have had a mini-resurgence behind Gafford, winning 3 consecutive games entering the conference tourney.

As a potential NBA Draft lottery pick, Gafford has the ability to dominate against anyone, and he’s shown what he can do in key moments. If he continues his hot streak, the Hogs could make a bit of a run in Nashville.
