Hot Seat Rankings: Muschamp maintains hottest seat despite consecutive wins

There are only three weeks left in the regular season, and coaches throughout the SEC are running out of time to validate themselves by season’s end. Only one SEC head coach seems likely to be fired, but a few others still have something to prove if they hope to avoid beginning next season on the hot seat.

With that said, here are this week’s Hot Seat Rankings on the eve of Week 12 in the SEC:

THE HOT SEAT

1. Will Muschamp: Muschamp’s Florida Gators have won back to back games in convincing fashion since their latest bye week, which has created quite a mess in Gainesville after fans chanted for Muschamp to be fired during a Homecoming night loss to Missouri. It still seems more likely than not that he’ll be canned at season’s end, but Florida has an opportunity to extend its win streak to as many as four games with a win this week over South Carolina and a freebie next week against Eastern Kentucky. The Florida State game will decide a lot, but even a win in the season finale might not be enough to save Muschamp’s job.

THE WARM SEATS

2. Derek Mason: Vanderbilt’s SEC record dropped to 0-6 after last week’s loss to Florida, and the Dores haven’t even come within 10 points of an SEC victory this year. It’s almost certain Mason will receive more time in Nashville than just one season, but he needs to start showing some signs of progress soon. He has a promising core of freshmen, but if Vandy doesn’t deliver in its final two games of this season or the first handful of next season Mason could find himself on the hot seat.

3. Bret Bielema: Unlike Mason, Bielema is already in Year 2 on the job and he’s still yet to win an SEC game at Arkansas. He has three more chances this season, but none of those games will be easy. Unless the Hogs can find a way to beat LSU, Ole Miss or SEC East leader Missouri in the final three weeks of the season, Bielema will need a big season in 2015 to appease the fan base in Fayetteville.

4. Mark Stoops: Stoops is just weeks removed from a recent contract extension, which makes Kentucky’s current losing streak more frustrating but also assures the Big Blue Nation there head coach will be back next season. The Wildcats have shown vast improvement from recent years, but their struggles to win a sixth game and clinch bowl eligibility have the fan base anxious. As long as Stoops continues moving the program forward, his job is safe. But if Kentucky’s 5-1 start was his peak as head coach, the Cats are going to be in trouble.
