Remember when everyone felt good about the 2015 SEC football season?

Optimism runs rampant in the summer, and it is often the same song from fans of all 14 programs.

Good players are the best ever, young players are stars waiting to develop, and even bad players are just a coaching tweak away from being solid contributors.

And your opponents? All beatable.

But how often do we let our imaginations cloud the reality of the situation?

Now that we’ve completed 10 weeks of the regular season, let’s play judge and jury on how each SEC team has performed in comparison to preseason expectation.

Back in June, Vegas line-setter CG Technology released its regular-season win totals for wager. We’ll use those as a rough guide to the public’s expectations for each team.

For the sake of this game, teams are either exceeding expectations or falling short. There is no middle ground.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Preseason win total: 9.5

Never sleep on Alabama, you guys. Some folks did this preseason, citing a lack of certainty at quarterback, a weak secondary and the loss of Amari Cooper as reasons to be pessimistic. Yet here we are in early November talking about the Crimson Tide winning the SEC West and potentially playing for the national championship. Verdict: Exceeding expectations.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Preseason win total: 8

Blame it on injuries and the loss to Toledo. Even though the Rockets are a very good team this year, it was an early-season loss that soured many on the possibilities of this team contending for a league title. Still, the Razorbacks have rebounded nicely in recent weeks and could very well make their fans happy with a decent body of work by the time it is all over. Verdict: Falling short.

Auburn Tigers

Preseason win total: 8.5

Remember when Jeremy Johnson was a Heisman candidate and the Tigers were picked to win the SEC in spite of Alabama being picked to win the SEC West? Good times. Verdict: Falling short.

Florida Gators

Preseason win total: 7

The Gators are SEC East champions and have an outside shot at the College Football Playoff with a first-year head coach at the helm. They were picked to finish fifth in the division. Need I say more? Verdict: Exceeding expectations.

Georgia Bulldogs

Preseason win total: 9

The overwhelming preseason favorite to win the SEC East has fallen on its face in losses to Alabama and Florida and let a winnable game against Tennessee slip through its fingers. Anytime your coach is taking this much heat, you’re likely not meeting expectations. Verdict: Falling short.

Kentucky Wildcats

Preseason win total: 5.5

Ask me last month, and I say this team is on its way to exceeding expectations. Now? It’s looking more and more like a repeat of 2014’s disappointing finish. Verdict: Falling short.

LSU Tigers

Preseason win total: 8.5

LSU fans may be disappointed with the most recent game against Alabama, but this season has been a smashing success so far. Leonard Fournette is one of the best players in the country, and this team still has plenty to play for in the final three weeks of the regular season. Verdict: Exceeding expectations.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Preseason win total: 7

The Bulldogs won 11 games in 2014 and returned the league’s best quarterback, but they were still picked to finish last in the SEC West. Mississippi State is doing a really nice job of proving that to be a bad prediction, and it is showing that expectations were set much too low for this season. Verdict: Exceeding expectations.

Missouri Tigers

Preseason win total: 7.5

It’s tough to three-peat as a division champ in the SEC, so many were expecting to see a bit of a drop-off from the Tigers this season. But I don’t think many were projecting this steep of a fall. The Tigers defense is as good as ever, but that offense is horrible. Verdict: Falling short.

Ole Miss Rebels

Preseason win total: 8.5

I’m going to take the glass half-full approach to this season for the Rebels. They beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, achieved a Top 5 ranking, and then lost some games to a couple of really good teams on the road in Florida and Memphis. Last week’s home loss to Arkansas is a warning sign, but I’d like to think this team is still exceeding expectations after starting the season having no idea if it even had a quarterback worth starting. As it turns out, Chad Kelly is terrific. Verdict: Exceeding expectations.

South Carolina Gamecocks

Preseason win total: 6.5

The defense is still one of the worst in the league, there have been all kinds of injury issues at quarterback and the Head Ball Coach decided to hang it up because he just wasn’t getting the job done anymore. Hard to say this season has been anything but a disappointment, even by reduced standards. Verdict: Falling short.

Tennessee Volunteers

Preseason win total: 8

Even though the Vols can match that win total by running the table against North Texas, Missouri and Vanderbilt, I believe most would say this season has turned out to have missed the mark on the extreme preseason hype Tennessee received coming into the season. Painfully close losses to Oklahoma, Florida, Arkansas and Alabama only enhance the narrative that is has been disappointing. Verdict: Falling short.

Texas A&M Aggies

Preseason win total: 8

Kevin Sumlin continues to bring in top-shelf Texas recruiting classes to one of the best facilities in country with expectations that the Aggies may contend for SEC and national championships, but this season has again exposed that the program just isn’t ready for that type of expectation. The Aggies likely will get to eight wins, and they’re probably meeting a more realistic take on expectations, but we’ll lean to “falling short” for the sake of this game. Verdict: Falling short.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Preseason win total: 3.5

The Commodores have a good chance at topping the win total, but ask any Vanderbilt fan and they likely feel like this team is underperforming thanks to an embarrassingly bad offense. Week 1’s loss to Western Kentucky was brutal, and Week 10’s loss to Florida wasn’t much better. Verdict: Falling short.
