SEC lands top 4 teams in ESPN's updated power rankings after Week 3
SEC teams have been on a roll in 2024.
The conference put 9 teams in the AP Top 25 following Week 3, including 6 of the top 7. On Monday, ESPN’s panel of experts took it a step further as their updated power rankings include 4 teams at the top of the list.
That’s right, Nos. 1-4 are all SEC teams, with Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee taking the spots in that order. All 4 teams are undefeated through Week 3.
In ESPN’s post-Week 3 update, the Longhorns moved to the top spot after previously being No. 2. The Bulldogs fell to No. 2 after a closer-than-expected game against Kentucky in Week 3. The Crimson Tide moved up to No. 3 after previously being No. 7. The Volunteers moved up to No. 4 after being No. 5 last week.
Ohio State is the non-SEC team that previously figured into the top 4, as the Buckeyes were No. 2 last week. The team fell to No. 5 after Week 3, but not due to anything the team did wrong. The Buckeyes were off in Week 3 but still fell due to the impressive performances of the aforementioned teams.
In ESPN’s complete power rankings, 8 SEC teams are included. Ole Miss is at No. 7, Missouri is at No. 9, Oklahoma is at No. 15, and LSU is at No. 21. Texas A&M is the lone SEC team included in the AP Top 25 that did not make it into ESPN’s power rankings.
Ole Miss was in the top 4 last week, but the team is now at No. 7. Again, the Rebels didn’t lose or anything, their fall was just the result of other teams’ good performances.
It will be interesting to see how these power rankings are affected by Week 4. Tennessee plays at Oklahoma, Texas plays UL Monroe, and Georgia and Alabama both have a bye week.
2 weeks. In 2 weeks Pac 12 Alabama or choking Georgia will be looking up at Vols.
