SEC Saturday Sleepers: Week 6’s top under-the-radar performances

After every weekend of games, you always hear about the performances of the Kenny Hills, the Amari Coopers and the Todd Gurleys of the SEC. But there are also the performances you don’t hear as much about, coming from the under-the-radar SEC players…the sleepers.

Who were the best of the Saturday Sleepers from Week 6? Take a look.

Bryan Cox Jr., DE, Florida
Week 6 stats: five tackles, three sacks, one quarterback hurry

The Gators defensive line exploded yesterday against an overwhelmed Tennessee offensive line and knocked down quarterback Justin Worley six times. Florida was paced by sophomore defensive end Bryan Cox Jr, who led team with three sacks. He also had five solo tackles and one QB hurry. Cox’s performance was also inspiring due to the emotional pain he was dealing with prior to the game after attending his grandfather’s funeral earlier in the week and not arriving at the team hotel until late Friday night. He said after the game he dedicated his three sacks to his grandfather.

Speedy Noil, WR, Texas A&M
Week 6 stats: three receptions, 50 yards and two touchdowns

The Aggies may have lost Saturday, but they weren’t without their highlight plays in Starkville. Although Noil only hauled in three catches, he made them count by racking up 50 yards and two scores. It wasn’t necessarily Noil’s number that were impressive, but rather a few catches he made that’ll likely end up on SportsCenter. His most incredible catch came when he was able to out jump a Mississippi State defender along the sideline near the end zone, tip-toe his way towards a touchdown and outstretching his arm for the score just before going out of bounds.

Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn
Week 6 stats: four receptions, 144 yards and one touchdown

While Nick Marshall’s 326 total yards and four touchdowns will grab the headlines for Auburn, I wouldn’t be surprised if Auburn fans are more excited about the night Sammie Coates had against LSU. Hobbled by a knee injury, the Tigers’ 2013 leading receiver hadn’t been the same this season, but last night changed all of that as the junior returned to form, catching four passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. If Coates’ can regain last year’s magic, the Auburn passing game became much more dangerous for the latter half of the season.

Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
Week 6 stats: 23 carries, 183 yards and three touchdowns

The story of last night’s South Carolina – Kentucky game is obviously the big Wildcats win. However, South Carolina running back Mike Davis, who was a darkhorse Heisman candidate during the preseason, enjoyed a career high 183 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Kentucky. Because of a slow start to the season, Davis has slid back in SEC running back talks, but the junior back is really starting to heat up as he has finally healed from an early-season rib injury.

Richie Brown, LB, Mississippi State
Week 6 stats: three tackles and three interceptions

Lost in the Dak Prescott Heisman hype was the performance of sophomore linebacker Richie Brown, who could have been as much responsible for the Bulldogs’ win as Prescott. Brown seemed to just be in the right place at the right time on several occasions, picking off three Kenny Hill passes. Two of his interceptions halted Texas A&M drives that were at least at midfield or in opposing territory. It will be a day Brown never forgets as the Bulldogs dismantled the Aggies 48-31.
