Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson could be on his way out of South Bend, and according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy nearly half the SEC has expressed interest in picking up the star signal caller.

Golson is on track to graduate from Notre Dame this May, which would make him eligible to transfer to another school without having to sit out a year. He has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining.

However, as Bleacher Report’s Barrett Sallee noticed, there is a clause in the graduate transfer rule that could keep Golson at Notre Dame.

According to the rule, Golson’s year-long dismissal from the football program in 2013 for academic misconduct could prohibit him from transferring. The rule lists the following circumstances as a case to prohibit the transfer of a player between institutions:

The student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution (excluding limited discipline applied by a sports team).

Per Sallee, there is an appeals process in place that could allow Golson to still transfer.

Rumors regarding Golson’s future have already begun circling throughout the media. Reports last week stated Golson was interested in transferring to LSU, which boasted the SEC’s worst passing offense in 2014.
