Every Thursday, we rank the SEC and ACC teams in one power poll. The order of the SEC teams is based on our SDS Power Rankings and does not deviate.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF CONTENDERS

1. Mississippi State (9-0)

2. Florida State (9-0): The Seminoles didn’t receive much respect in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings despite winning its 25th consecutive game as the defending national champions last time out against Virginia. The selection committee placed one-loss Oregon over the unbeaten Seminoles causing coach Jimbo Fisher to comically question the importance of winning games.

3. Alabama (8-1): Behind two one-loss teams and a pair of unbeatens in the CFP rankings, Alabama knows exactly what it has to do to reach the final four and that begins with a win Saturday afternoon over top-ranked Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide’s coming off an emotional overtime victory at LSU, one that surprisingly wasn’t enough to sway the selection committee in Nick Saban’s favor. Instead, TCU got the No. 4 nod after beating Kansas State.

4. Auburn (7-2)

FIGHTING FOR QUALITY BOWL PLACEMENT

5. LSU (7-3)
6. Ole Miss (8-2)
7. Georgia (7-2)
8. Clemson (7-2)
9. Duke (8-1)
10. Texas A&M (7-3)

A WIN AWAY FROM MAKING REAL NOISE

11. Georgia Tech (8-2)
12. Miami (6-3)

13. Mizzou (7-2): The Tigers control their own destiny in the SEC’s Eastern Division, but it won’t be easy over the final three weeks including Saturday night’s battle at Texas A&M. Mizzou’s been able to overcome struggles on offense to win three consecutive games since a shutout loss to Georgia. Fueled by defense, the Tigers have enough talent on that side of the ball to win out and reach Atlanta.

14. Louisville (7-3)
15. Florida (5-3)

DON’T LET THE RECORDS FOOL YOU

16. Tennessee (4-5)
17. Boston College (6-4)
18. Arkansas (4-5)

AVERAGE TEAMS STILL IN BOWL CONTENTION

19. Pittsburgh (4-5)

20. Kentucky (5-5): After a 5-1 start, the Wildcats have lost four straight games in the SEC and must beat Tennessee this weekend to avoid playing for bowl eligibility in the season finale rivalry showdown at Louisville. Kentucky’s offense is in a rut and its defense was exposed by Georgia in last week’s embarrassing loss at home. Is there enough time to correct mistakes?

21. N.C. State (5-5)
22. South Carolina (4-5)
23. North Carolina (4-5)

THE FORGETTABLE OLD DOMINION

24. Virginia Tech (4-5)
25. Virginia (4-6)

MAYBE NEXT YEAR

26. Vanderbilt (3-7)
27. Syracuse (3-7)
28. Wake Forest (2-7)
