You know the saying: “Respect your elders.”

It seems like every year, underclassmen are becoming more and more prominent in the college game. In recent years, we’ve seen the younger crowd take home prestigious awards that had always been held down by juniors and seniors.

Here at Saturday Down South, we don’t overlook the old men of the college game. Let’s run down five of the best seniors from this past week.

Blake Sims, Alabama

There’s a quarterback battle raging in Tuscaloosa, both on the field and between fans. Sims’ play didn’t suffer for it and he was sharp from the opening kickoff against Florida Atlantic.

Bama cruised to three touchdowns on their first three possessions, all piloted by Sims, and the senior showed what he can add to the Tide’s offense when he scampered for a seven-yard TD. He also showed some good chemistry with the Tide’s top offensive threat, Amari Cooper. Sims finished 12-of-14 for 228 yards and two TDs, plus that running TD.

Bud Sasser, Missouri

The Tigers’ senior wideout had himself quite the day against Toledo. Maty Mauk looked his way five times, and Sasser hauled in all five of them, good for 121 yards and touchdown in the Tigers’ 49-24 road win. His day didn’t end there, though. After Mauk threw a second quarter pick, Toledo ran the ball back deep into Mizzou territory. Sasser saved the day, though, stripping the ball out for Missouri to recover.

Alvin Dupree, Kentucky

Kentucky put up a dominating defensive effort against Ohio, and Dupree had a big hand in that. The linebacker had a tackle for loss and three total stops. His next sack will tie him for fourth all-time on Kentucky’s career list, and he’s the SEC’s active sack leader.

Deshazor Everett, Texas A&M

The Aggies safety helped anchor a much-improved defensive unit against Lamar. He picked off a pass in the 73-3 win and recorded four totals tackles, three of them solo. Improved secondary play is going to be key for A&M going forward, and Everett can be a big part of that.

Andre Debose, Florida

It feels like the receiver has been around forever. After missing last year with a torn ACL suffered in the preseason, the fifth-year senior is back in action for the Gators. In Florida’s belated season opener, he put up some big numbers: four catches for 97 yards, and he returned five punts for an average of 26 yards. If the Gators are going to throw like they did on Saturday all season, Debose should be popping up on this list again.
