Spencer Rattler a 'strong candidate' to make first NFL start vs. Tampa Bay in Week 6, per report
Spencer Rattler could make his first-career start on Sunday vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a report.
That’s according to a report from the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. Rattler would be starting in place of Derek Carr, who suffered an injury against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football.
Carr was initially replaced by Jake Haener in Kansas City on Monday night, but it could be Rattler who gets the nod moving forward. Haener was 2-of-7 for 17 yards in New Orleans’ loss to the Chiefs on MNF.
More on the #Saints’ QB situation: Rookie fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to get the start in Derek Carr’s absence, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

If Rattler does start for the Saints on Sunday, he’d be 1 of 5 rookie quarterbacks who are expected to play this weekend. Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams and Bo Nix all won starting jobs out of training camp. New England’s Drake Maye is reportedly set to make his first career start this week as well.
However, those other 4 rookie quarterbacks were all taken in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. Rattler was a fifth-round pick following a prolific college career at both Oklahoma and South Carolina.
If Rattler does earn the start this weekend, he’d be going up against for Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. Rattler and Mayfield did not overlap in Norman, however. Mayfield’s final collegiate season was in 2017 while Rattler didn’t enroll at Oklahoma until 2019.
Rattler is poised to become the first quarterback out of South Carolina to play in the NFL since Connor Shaw.
