Five of the seven SEC West teams opened spring camp with some form of a quarterback competition.

While technically that still remains true, it sure seems as though several have found their starter, even if it hasn’t been formally announced as such.

Let’s take a look at the updated quarterback situations as the race to opening day continues.

Alabama

Starter status: Undetermined.

Update: The race continues, with Cooper Bateman appearing to have the early edge over Blake Barnett and David Cornwell.

Nick Saban told reporters Monday that the starter will be the guy who takes charge of the team. No surprise there.

“The guy that wins the quarterback job is going to be the guy that wins the team over with his ability to play on a consistent basis, make the right kind of choices and decisions and show the kind of leadership to affect other people,” Saban told AL.com and others Monday. “I think this is something that everybody in the group needs to work on.”

Biggest question: How long will Saban wait to make a decision? Bateman and Barnett offer different skills, which, in theory, would impact Lane Kiffin’s playcalling. Bateman has more game experience than his competitors, but not much more.

“He obviously has the most knowledge and experience with the offense,” Saban told reporters. “He’s also the guy that’s probably gotten more reps with the ones than anybody else. He’s done a nice job. I think there’s things that he needs to work on and we need to work on with him so that he can go out there and play with the kind of confidence and be the kind of leader and be the kind of decision-maker that we need at that position to play winning football. And that’s what we’ll continue to focus on.”

Arkansas

Starter status: Undetermined.

Update: Austin Allen is No. 1 on the depth chart, but that’s no guarantee he’ll hold off Rafe Peavey, Ricky Town or Ty Storey.

Biggest question: Is Allen ready? Offensive coordinator Dan Enos discussed each candidate’s strengths in an interview with ESPN.com. He said Peavey has the best arm strength in the group but said Allen has a little bit of everything.

“A combination of all of them,” Enos told ESPN.com. He’s a really good passer, really good arm strength, good mobility, a really hard worker and he really has a good grasp of what we’re doing too. Shoot, there were days last year during fall camp that I came in and I told our offensive staff while watching tape, ‘Little brother did better than big brother today.’ Brandon was very consistent but there were days we came in and Austin was like, ‘Whoa, that guy is good.’”

Auburn

Starter status: Undetermined.

Update: JUCO transfer John Franklin III is quickly emerging as a threat, if not the favorite. We’ve mentioned this several times, but most coaches don’t bring in JUCO QBs to sit and watch, and Franklin has impressed his coaches and teammates with his speed this spring. He scored on a long run in a recent scrimmage.

Biggest question: Is Gus Malzahn really ready to give up on Jeremy Johnson? Johnson still is sharing snaps with Franklin, and Malzahn said one reason Franklin got so many in an early scrimmage is the staff already knew what Johnson and Sean White could do. They wanted to see more of Franklin.

Franklin’s weight is a concern, especially because his style demands that he operate outside the protection of the pocket. But Nick Marshall wasn’t exactly built like Cam Newton, either, and that worked out better than OK.

LSU

Starter status: Brandon Harris.

Update: Danny Etling, a Purdue transfer, in theory is pushing Harris, but that’s all he’s doing: providing a reminder to keep working.

Biggest question: Can Harris develop into an All-SEC candidate?

The Tigers’ championship hopes depend less on Leonard Fournette — a known commodity — and more on how much of a production leap they get from Harris and the passing game.

He was middle-of-the-pack in just about every category last season — 2,158 yards, 13 TDs. Bumping up his completion percentage from 53.6 will help both stats considerably.

Mississippi State

Starter status: Undetermined.

Update: Dan Mullen continues to insist the race is wide open, and thus far the spring hasn’t provided any reason to believe it’s tilting more toward Damian Williams or Nick Fitzgerald, not with Nick Tiano and Elijah Staley also getting first-team reps.

“Everybody takes a snap with every group and everybody should have the equal number of reps going through spring,” Mullen told the Daily Journal. “We’ll see where we are after spring at that point, if there is a major separation in any of the four. However it sorts out, it’ll change the reps. But that might not happen until we get closer to the season.”

Biggest question: What about Williams? He seems to be the forgotten man after redshirting last season, but he has started before.

Ole Miss

Starter status: Chad Kelly.

Update: He’s even better than last season, according to his coaches, which gives the Rebels the biggest quarterback advantage in the division.

Biggest question: Can the Rebels’ revamped line keep Kelly clean long enough to allow him to make a run at a second consecutive 4,000-yard season? He’s mobile and experienced enough to avoid big hits and already in firm control of the offense.

Texas A&M

Starter status: Undetermined.

Update: Nothing has been officially announced, but this is another case where it seems transfer Trevor Knight has taken the lead in the race against Jake Hubenak.

Biggest question: Just how big will Noel Mazzone’s playbook be? Jeff Tarpley provided a pretty detailed look at the Aggies’ new offensive wrinkles and how all of the zone read options favor Knight.
