During his time on ESPN’s Russillo Show, Steve Spurrier talked about the impact that a new defensive coordinator can bring to a program. Interestingly, he cited Arkansas’s 2014 season as an example of how a new coordinator can have a big impact on the defensive performance.

Spurrier asked: “Can they make that big of a difference? They did at Arkansas. That’s a fact. In fact, Kevin Sumlin, us and them were sort of at the bottom of the SEC in most defensive categories, and I bet him $10 a few minutes ago that our defense would be more improved than his defense.”

The Gamecocks finished 12th in the SEC in scoring defense last season, allowing opponents to score over 30 points per game. The Aggies’ defense wasn’t much better allowing teams to score over 28 points per game.

South Carolina hired Jon Hoke as its new co-defensive coordinator, while Texas A&M hired LSU’s John Chavis.
