Now that former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is retired, he has time reflect on the important details of his career.

Like which of his famous one-liners worked best.

When one thinks of Spurrier one-liners, they probably think of the way he relentlessly went after Tennessee during the 90s, or the subtle jabs at Florida State in the midst of that heated rivalry.

But in a recent interview with ESPN’s Chris Low, the Head Ball Coach revealed that his favorite zinger of all didn’t involve either of those teams.

It was one he quipped about Georgia during his time at South Carolina.

Here’s what he told Low about answering questions from Tennessee fans during a golf tournament in Knoxville on Friday:

“They were asking me about all those things I said, the Citrus Bowl jokes and Free Shoes U. stuff,” Spurrier said. “I told them I always thought the best one didn’t have anything to do with Tennessee or FSU. It’s the one I said about preferring to play Georgia the second week of the season because you could always count on them having two or three good players suspended every year. Everybody said, ‘Did you really say that?’ and I said, ‘Yes, because it’s true.’ ”

Spurrier was at Tennessee’s spring game on Saturday to be honored as a recipient of the Neyland Award.

The Tennessee native has long been a thorn in the side of Vols fans, so accepting that award on their home turf was likely gratifying for Spurrier and tough to swallow for Tennessee fans all at the same time.

Retired or not, that’s the way that rivalry is supposed to be.
