Count Steve Spurrier among those in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff. The Head Ball Coach also thinks UCF deserves a shot at the Playoff championship.

“I think it definitely ought to go to eight teams,” Spurrier said Thursday, per The Gainesville Sun’s Graham Hall. “All the (Power 5) conference champions would go, and then three at-large teams would go. Then UCF would have a chance.”

Spurrier’s new team, the Alliance of American Football’s Orlando Apollos, hosted an event in Gainesville Thursday. Since his team is in the same city as UCF, it makes sense for Spurrier to advocate for UCF in the press and try to win over football fans in Orlando.

The HBC is far from the first person to suggest a “Power 5 champs plus three” model, but without a guaranteed spot for a Group of 5 champ it wouldn’t have resulted in UCF playing for the CFP championship in the 2018 season going by the committee’s final rankings. The three highest-ranked teams not to win a Power 5 conference were No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 5 Georgia and No. 7 Michigan. Spurrier’s suggested playoff would have No. 9 Washington, the Pac-12 champ, getting in over No. 8 UCF.
