Steve Spurrier knows a thing or two about coaching in big games in the SEC. Now outside of the coaching ranks, Spurrier still has his eyes on the SEC, and he’s interested in the marquee matchup this weekend between Alabama and Georgia.

Already, the top 5 matchup between the 2 powerhouse programs has received hype as the Game of the Year in college football. It’s not hard to see why with Kirby Smart looking to get the Alabama monkey off his back now that Nick Saban has retired and Kalen DeBoer has taken over.

However, if the two teams play like their recent game, Spurrier says Alabama would have the edge — and the game is at home for the Crimson Tide.

“The way they both played recently, you’d have to go Alabama. It is at Alabama. Then again, Georgia was picked No. 1 (in the preseason),” Spurrier said on the “Another Dooley Noted Podcast” with Pat Dooley.

Spurrier did at least admit anything can happen when it come to the world of football, and the NFL provides plenty of evidence of that:

“You never know, anything can happen in sports. All you have to do is watch those pro teams,” said Spurrier. “… Every Saturday, one team can really play a lot better than the other team.”

In the end, Spurrier is currently riding with the home team while acknowledging Smart’s record in the Georgia vs. Alabama series. Of course, this is a great opportunity for Smart to prove the SEC is his league now that Saban is gone, but DeBoer’s team was clicking their last time out.

“Since it’s at Bama, I would take Alabama.” Spurrier said. “…Didn’t I read where Kirby [Smart] is 1-6 against Alabama or something like that? So they have been the two best, Georgia and Bama, for the last several years. So it’ll be a huge game.”
