It’s been done four times since the NCAA Tournament expanded in 1985. It’s the pinnacle of the two revenue sports in most athletics departments and usually places the program atop the athletics directors’ cup standings for a year.

Which schools have won an SEC football championship in the fall and followed with an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in March?

Given Alabama’s basketball season, it appears to be a long shot for the feat to be achieved this year, but that will be decided this week.

Here are the four times it did happened:

LSU, 1986-87: Bill Arnsparger’s team went 9-3, including 5-1 in the conference, most notably a 14-10 victory over sixth-ranked Alabama in Birmingham. The Tigers fell to Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. They rose to No. 5 in the AP poll and finished the season No. 10. The team was led by Tommy Hodson at quarterback, who passed for 2,261 with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Wendell Davis was the top receiver with 80 catches for 1,244 yards and 11 TDs.

On the hardwood, Dale Brown’s team went 24-15 and advanced to the Elite 8. Brown’s club lost to Alabama in the conference tournament, but then rattled off wins over Georgia Tech, Temple and DePaul in the NCAA Tournament. It lost to Indiana, 77-76, in the Riverfront Coliseum. Anthony Wilson led the team at 16.6 points per game and Nikita Wilson averaged 15.6.

Alabama, 1989-90: Bill Curry’s team went 10-2. The Tide entered the Iron Bowl undefeated only to lose 30-20. That meant there was a three-way tie in the SEC that season with Auburn and Tennessee. The Tide then fell to Miami in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, 33-25. Alabama rose to a No. 2 ranking and finished the season ranked No. 9. Gary Hollingsworth led the team at quarterback with 2,379 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Siran Stacy had 1,079 rushing yards and 17 TDs. On defense, John Mangum and Efram Thomas each had five interceptions.

Wimp Sanderson and the basketball team, meanwhile, went 26-9 and 12-6 in the SEC. Melvin Cheatum, Robert Horry and David Benoit each averaged double figures in points, and Keith Askins was at 9.9 per game. In the SEC Tournament, the Tide beat Mississippi State, Auburn and Mississippi. In the NCAA Tournament, they beat Colorado State and Arizona to extend a season-high winning streak to eight games. They then fell to Loyola-Marymount.

Florida, 1993-94: Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Eric Rhett led the Gators to an 11-2 season. They lost to Auburn and Florida State, but rebounded to beat Alabama to win the SEC title and then West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. They finished the season ranked fifth in the country.

Lon Kruger and the basketball team went 29-8 and 12-4 in the SEC. Dan Cross, Craig Brown and Dametri Hill each averaged in double figures on a team that wasn’t ranked until late January. They beat South Carolina and Alabama in the SEC Tournament, then fell to Kentucky. The Gators then won four games in the NCAA Tournament — over James Madison, Penn, UConn (in overtime) and Boston College. They lost to Duke, 70-65, in the Final Four in a tournament that was eventually won by Arkansas.

Florida, 2006-07: The first glimpse of Tim Tebow emerged in a dual-threat offense with Chris Leak at quarterback under the tutelage of Urban Meyer. The team that went 13-1 and 7-1 in the SEC. Percy Harvin, Deshawn Wynn and Andre Caldwell contributed to the offense. The Gators’ loss was at Auburn, but they beat Arkansas in the SEC Championship Game and then Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game.

Billy Donovan’s club, meanwhile, went 35-5 on the strength of Taurean Green, Corey Brewer, Joakim Noah and Al Horford, who all averaged double figures. They closed the season on a 10-game winning streak with SEC Tournament wins over Georgia, Ole Miss and Arkansas. Then, they beat Jackson State, Purdue, Butler, Oregon, UCLA and Ohio State to cut down the nets again.
