A politician from Waco is throwing up a Hail Mary to try and keep the Big 12 together.

Texas State Sen. Brian Birdwell is doing what he can to block Texas from leaving the Big 12 for the SEC according to KWTX in Waco.

“Here we go again, the University of Texas Regents appear to be making a decision timed to avoidance of the legislature,” Birdwell said this week. “It causes us great concern.”

In order to prevent Texas from leaving the Big 12, Birdwell has co-authored SB 76 which requires approval from lawmakers before state universities can switch athletic conferences.

According to KWTX, the bill is not on the current special agenda. That’s not all. If SB 76 someone gets voted on, its companion bill, HB 298, would need help from House Democrats in Washington D.C.

As we said, this is a real Hail Mary.

In essence, this is a symbolic gesture that won’t amount to much.

Meanwhile, the SEC is set to vote on whether to add Texas and Oklahoma on Thursday.
