While on a radio show in Gainesville last month, former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier took what was perceived to be a jab at Alabama coach Nick Saban.

The Head Ball Coach was asked what he thought about Saban winning the Maxwell Football Club’s Coach of the Year Award, and in his classic form he responded, “Obviously, they must have voted before the final game.”

Obviously, this created some banter for fans across the SEC, but Spurrier clarified his statements to GridIron Now on Wednesday.

“No,” said Spurrier. “I wasn’t trying to be critical of Nick. I was just making the statement that the vote had been taken before the national championship game, which Clemson won. And if they had waited until after it, they would have probably voted for Dabo Swinney.

“Just like the Heisman Trophy. Lamar Jackson probably wouldn’t have won it after the way Deshaun Watson played in the national championship.”

Spurrier has been known to throw some jabs during his time, but is there a grain of truth in his criticism? After watching Lamar Jackson crumble at the hands of the LSU defense in the Citrus Bowl and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson slice up Alabama in the title game, it leaves some mystery to how the Heisman would’ve looked if it were a postseason award, too.

Coach of the Year, though, may be another discussion entirely.
