Big news for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics has just been announced as spectators have been barred from the event due to rising COVID cases in Japan.

Japan has called a state of emergency following the rise in COVID cases. The state of emergency will run through Aug. 22. The upcoming games are set to be played between July 23 – Aug 8.

The Tokyo Olympics had already been planning on banning fans from overseas prior to this announcement.

“It is regrettable that we are delivering the games in a very limited format, facing the spread of coronavirus infections,” Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto said Thursday after talks between government officials, Tokyo organizers and Olympic and Paralympic representatives.

“I am sorry to those who purchased tickets and everyone in local areas.”
