A train carrying a group of LSU football fans collided with a dump truck near Birmingham, Ala. on Friday afternoon, killing the driver of the truck.

None of the train’s passengers were injured in the accident, which happened in Bessemer, about 15 miles from Birmingham.

Many of the 124 passengers on the Amtrak train were traveling to Saturday’s LSU-Alabama football game.

“We were in the dining car, toward the front of the train,” LSU fan Amy Duplessis told WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge.  “My back was to the engine and I felt a thump and we saw a big ball of smoke. As the train passed, I saw something flipping, saw lots of dust and then the train came to a stop.”

According to Duplessis, the train left New Orleans on Friday morning and had recently let off about 100 LSU fans in Tuscaloosa before the accident. She and a group of about 50 people were taking the train to Birmingham. They planned to spend the night there, then travel to Tuscaloosa on a charter bus Saturday.

The accident delayed the train, but it was expected to arrive in Birmingham shortly after 5 p.m. Eastern time.

“The first engine is damaged, so they told us they are going to pull that off and try to get the second engine to pull us to Birmingham,” Duplessis said.
