Updated SEC men's basketball standings following Saturday's games
Saturday’s slate of SEC men’s basketball games led to plenty of excitement, as Kentucky upset Tennessee in Knoxville and Mississippi State ended Ole Miss’s hot streak.
Now, we’re entering the stretch run for many teams in conference play. Alabama has played 14 SEC matchups, as have a few other teams. Meanwhile, Texas A&M has only played 8 league games.
So, after Saturday’s slate of games, here’s how the current SEC standings shape up:
- Alabama — 13-1 (18-5 overall)
- Arkansas — 9-4 (17-5 overall)
- LSU — 9-4 (14-6 overall)
- Florida — 7-5 (11-6 overall)
- Tennessee — 8-6 (15-6 overall)
- Mizzou — 7-6 (14-6 overall)
- Ole Miss — 7-7 (12-9 overall)
- Kentucky — 7-7 (8-13 overall)
- Mississippi State — 6-8 (12-11 overall)
- Georgia — 6-9 (13-9 overall)
- Auburn — 5-9 (11-12 overall)
- South Carolina — 3-9 (5-11 overall)
- Texas A&M — 2-6 (8-7 overall)
- Vanderbilt — 2-10 (6-12 overall)
There will likely be some makeup games announced soon, but it doesn’t seem likely that A&M will get in all of its league games. We’ll see how that affects things moving forward.
There’s no sense in forcing makeup games at this point. The top six teams in the conference appear solidly in the dance while any others would have to win the conference tourney to get in.
There’s plenty of sense. Other than Alabama at 1, 2-7 could go anyway and kick LSU out and move Mizzou up significantly if they win out.
Still getting into the tournament. That’s all that matters. Playing more games doesn’t get anyone else in, but possibly could keep some out. Doesn’t make sense to do something that hurts the conference.
And team seven is definitely out.
Yes, it definitely could hurt the conference as a whole.
I don’t keep up with college BB real close. I read a few headlines and very few articles. That being said I didn’t want this to come off as a flame, but as an honest question. Why is AU so down this year? They have been so good the last few years that them being 4th from last is surprising to me.
I think the Big Ten decided to not make up any games and go with the standings by winning percentage. The three teams that have lost the most games are the bottom three–South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt. None of these three are going to win the SEC Tournament. Since Auburn is not eligible for the NCAA Tournament, the SEC would be better off reducing the SEC Tournament to 10 teams, increasing the chances that the champion will not be overtaxed with games before Selection Sunday. If the standings stayed the same as today, it would look like this.
Thursday
7- Ole Miss vs. 10- Georgia
8- Kentucky vs. 9- Mississippi St.
Friday
4- Florida vs. 5- Tennessee
3- LSU vs. 6- Missouri
1- Alabama vs. 8-Kentucky or 9-Miss. St.
2- Arkansas vs. 7-Ole Miss or 10-Georgia
Or, it would be even better to just go with the top 8 and having a Friday-Sunday or Thursday-Saturday tournament
1- Alabama vs. 8- Kentucky
4- Florida vs. 5- Tennessee
2- Arkansas vs. 7- Ole Miss
3- LSU vs. 6- Missouri
Looking at that above, the 8-team tournament looks incredible, much better than any other possible tournament.
