Depending on what side of the coin you’re on, upsets are either a joyous occasion worthy of celebrations into the night and rushing the field to whoop it up or the cause for catatonic stares and excuses.

Either way, they make the game more fun. Football is a sport where anything can happen, where a less talented but well-prepared team can knock off a big favorite on any given weekend.

We looked ahead at the schedule week-by-week to pick out games that have upset potential, based on preseason projections for the SEC’s teams.

Editor’s note: Favorites in each game are listed first.

Week 1 — Texas A&M vs. Arizona State: The Aggies have opened as a 4.5-point favorite, give or take depending on the sports book you check. A&M will be in its first week running a new defensive scheme going against a potent offense, which could lead to issues.

Week 2 — Florida vs. ECU: The Pirates are one of the most difficult non-power conference teams in the nation to play, and they gave the Gators a good fight in the bowl matchup between the two last season. With a rebuilding project just getting started, the Gators are at risk to drop this early home game.

Week 3 — Auburn at LSU: Auburn is an early pick to not just win the SEC, but to possibly take home the national championship. Traveling to LSU early in the season will provide a mighty test, even if its slated as a 3:30 p.m. game, avoiding the dreaded night game in Death Valley.

Week 4 — South Carolina vs. UCF: SEC home teams are almost always big favorites over non-power conference teams, but UCF isn’t your average non-power team, having made a BCS bowl just two years ago.

Week 5 — Missouri vs. South Carolina: The Mayor’s Cup has yielded some dramatic games in the last two years, with both teams pulling off late fourth-quarter comebacks. Mizzou is rightfully an East frontrunner, but don’t count out the Gamecocks as long as Steve Spurrier is calling plays.

Week 6 — Georgia at Tennessee: The Bulldogs will enter the season ranked in the top 10, and shouldn’t drop below that barring an unforeseen loss before this game. The upstart Volunteers will have a chance to stake their claim to the East in this showdown in Knoxville.

Week 7 — Auburn at Kentucky: Last year, Auburn went on the road and won a Thursday night game against a tough opponent. Can they pull off that feat two years in a row, this time against an SEC opponent? Kentucky should have the offense to compete with the Tigers, even if the Wildcats can’t slow them down.

Week 8 — Auburn at Arkansas: The Tigers will get a long week to rest after the game at Kentucky, but they don’t get a break when they face the physical Razorbacks. Arkansas is more than capable of giving Auburn’s running game trouble while playing keep away with their own running game.

Week 9 — Tennessee at Kentucky: The Vols are a popular sleeper pick to win the East, but this is still a pretty young team that doesn’t have a lot of experience winning on the road. Kentucky doesn’t figure to be very good, but the offense should at least cause some headaches for UT.

Week 10 — Florida vs. Vanderbilt: Both of these teams are going to be down again in 2015, but Vanderbilt going on the road to beat Florida (for the second straight time) would be a major accomplishment for Derek Mason in his second season at the helm, and like 2013, this looks to be a year the Gators are ripe to fall to some doormat teams.

Week 11 — Missouri vs. BYU: Mizzou gets to play a neutral-site game at Arrowhead Stadium, just two hours from campus. It should be a raucous environment, but BYU is yet another difficult non-power opponent that won’t be rattled by the stage.

Week 12 — Missouri vs. Tennessee: By this point in the season, this might not be considered an upset, but the Vols are faced with hitting the road for a critical game late in the season. If they can pull off the win in a hostile SEC environment, they could well be in control of the East.

Week 13 — Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt: Anything can happen in rivalry week, so it’s hard to call any game an upset. The Commodores going on the road to top Tennessee would be the biggest of them, and Vandy could have plenty of motivation, as there’s a chance the ‘Dores are playing for Mason’s job.
