Urban Meyer blasts idea of coaches wanting to avoid SEC Championship Game appearance
Urban Meyer isn’t buying the narrative that some coaches want to avoid playing in the SEC Championship Game under the new 12-team Playoff model.
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin sparked the debate earlier this week when he revealed that he’s talked to coaches who are hoping to avoid the SEC title game for fear of being left out of the CFP altogether with a loss.
“The conference championship could have a big impact both ways,” Kiffin said. “I’ve talked to some other coaches, and the feeling is that they don’t want to get in it. The reward to get a bye (in the playoffs) versus the risk of getting knocked out completely … is a really big risk.”
Meyer addressed that idea on the latest episode of the Triple Option Podcast.
“What do you mean you hope you don’t go to the championship game?” Meyer said. “You get up in the morning and say, as you’re driving to work, you say, ‘boy, I hope we don’t win the SEC Championship. That doesn’t compute.”
Despite Meyer’s opinion on the subject, later in the discussion, he insisted that a 3-loss SEC team would not get into the College Football Playoff over a 2-loss team.
With so many 2-loss teams in the SEC still vying for a berth in the title game, it’s possible the team that loses that game could end up on the outside-looking-in of the Playoff picture.
CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel also discussed the possibility on Tuesday evening. Manuel said the committee would consider conference championship game appearances in their final evaluation, but also said they would hold any team who qualifies for a conference title game in “high regard.”
Lane is a coach. Urban is not. I’ll go with Lane’s take. If I want to know what bar has theoat Cougars, I’ll call Urban
How many rings does Lane Whiffin have again? Oh yea.
Honestly, regardless of Lane, Urban or any other coach or any playoff system, it’s not hard to see CCG’s have run their course and are of little or no benefit for teams playing in them. The Conference revenue benefits for sure, but from a football perspective it’s a meaningless game at best, a punishment at worst.
Until the narrative of “2 losses is less than 3 so the team with 2 losses must be better” changes Meyer’s point is the same as the committee.
Strength of schedule is irrelevant. Play the weakest teams possible so you have fewer losses.
Urban needs to shut his piehole and focus on faking another heart condition. America has wised up and sees Urban’s true colors…his opinions don’t hold any value in the eyes of college football fans anymore.
The lack of questioning this ridiculous “playoff” (scheme would be too nice a name for it). … playoff rip-off should be a giant red flag about our sports news media!
And even worse because we have two NCAA divisions that have a real football playoff??? WTH?.
Who cares what Rural Myers thinks or says ?
Fact: the league is way too big to have a round robin true champ. Fact: the league could have two true division round robin champs meet for a kinda sorta champ of divisions but what does that mean ? All the best teams could be in one Div..
Maybe after all the bowl games get played we can lump 20 teams into an upper quality group in no specific order. Maybe lump 20 into a lower quality group. Good luck sorting the middle of the pack out. Pretty much an impossible but maybe the average ranking coul be within 30 or so places.
Was Lane talking to himself?
Lane is a Mean Girl.
