Urban Meyer isn’t buying the narrative that some coaches want to avoid playing in the SEC Championship Game under the new 12-team Playoff model.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin sparked the debate earlier this week when he revealed that he’s talked to coaches who are hoping to avoid the SEC title game for fear of being left out of the CFP altogether with a loss.

“The conference championship could have a big impact both ways,” Kiffin said. “I’ve talked to some other coaches, and the feeling is that they don’t want to get in it. The reward to get a bye (in the playoffs) versus the risk of getting knocked out completely … is a really big risk.”

Meyer addressed that idea on the latest episode of the Triple Option Podcast.

“What do you mean you hope you don’t go to the championship game?” Meyer said. “You get up in the morning and say, as you’re driving to work, you say, ‘boy, I hope we don’t win the SEC Championship. That doesn’t compute.”

Despite Meyer’s opinion on the subject, later in the discussion, he insisted that a 3-loss SEC team would not get into the College Football Playoff over a 2-loss team.

With so many 2-loss teams in the SEC still vying for a berth in the title game, it’s possible the team that loses that game could end up on the outside-looking-in of the Playoff picture.

CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel also discussed the possibility on Tuesday evening. Manuel said the committee would consider conference championship game appearances in their final evaluation, but also said they would hold any team who qualifies for a conference title game in “high regard.”
