There’s nothing quite like life in the SEC.

In a recent Q&A with AL.com, Shelley Meyer revealed that Big Ten coaches — and their spouses — are more cordial with each other compared to the Meyers’ previous stop at Florida.

“In the SEC, I did not get to know the wives very well and there’s a reason for that,” Meyer told AL.com. “The coaches aren’t good friends either, mostly because it’s so competitive. They’re really standoffish with each other. It’s almost like, ‘I can’t get too close because they might steal my ideas or something.’

“It’s different than that in the Big Ten.”

Urban’s wife says her husband is perceived as arrogant because he doesn’t come across as approachable as other coaches.

“I think people think he’s a jerk, but some of that, I know, is jealousy,” Shelley Meyer told AL.com. “It’s always jealousy, and maybe that he’s guarded. But he has to be guarded.”
