A few SEC teams are having rough seasons, and they really struggled on Saturday.

That’s why they’re in the latest edition of USA Today’s “Misery Index,” a weekly rundown of how fan bases are reacting to their struggling programs. The teams after Week 6? Texas A&M, Arkansas and Vanderbilt.

Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher was criticized for his conservative play calling, and Dan Wolken zeroed in on it by noting that U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was at the game on Saturday, but not even the most conservative person at Kyle Field. That was Fisher, according to Wolken, and he noted how Fisher more than once punted in Alabama territory.

“If a normal person had a window into the mind of Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, it might be more frightening than the new Exorcist movie,” Wolken wrote. “As it stands, Aggie fans will probably want to orally expel their pea soup after watching Fisher’s situational decision-making in a 26-20 loss to Alabama.”

At Arkansas, Wolken took aim at Dan Enos, and how the offensive coordinator responded to fans being critical of his performance. But it wasn’t any better in a loss to Ole Miss as the Arkansas offense gained just 286 yards in a 27-20 loss at Ole Miss, and the Razorbacks fell to 2-4. Wolken wrote: “Honestly, Arkansas should just let Enos spend all of his time responding to hate mail the rest of the season. Keeping him away from the playbook couldn’t hurt at this point.”

At Vanderbilt, Wolken focused on the Clark Lea quote from the 2022 SEC Media Days in which he said, “We know in time Vanderbilt football will be the best program in the country.” But the reality is Vanderbilt has “lost their 3 SEC games by an average of 19 points. And their schedule actually gets a lot tougher with Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee still to come.”

“If Lea truly thinks Vanderbilt can be the best program in the country, he might want to start with actually competing with the lower-tier teams in his own league,” Wolken wrote.
