Mike Leach has some strong thoughts about his football team after its 0-2 start.

And American athletics in general.

The Washington State coach during a Monday press conference called his squad “a JV softball team” following the Cougars’ 31-28 loss at Boise State last Saturday. Washington State began the season with a 45-42 home loss to FCS Eastern Washington, prompting Leach to question his players’ toughness.

But the fifth-year coach didn’t stop there.

He connected his team’s attitude to “all this stuff that’s contaminated America where they give every kid a trophy and they don’t keep score in Little League anymore.”

Leach eventually explained what’s specifically ailing his own team: poor route-running, awful tackling and an aversion to “running and hitting.”

We’ll see how the Cougars respond to their coach’s criticism when they host Idaho at 2 p.m. Saturday.
