Herm Edwards has never been a college head coach and hadn’t been a coach at any level since 2008, but that didn’t stop Arizona State from hiring him this offseason.

Since taking the position, he’s consistently made headlines with some of the outlandish things he’s said. However, his comments on Tuesday may take the cake.

As you can see in the video below, which accompanied this article on AZCentral.com, Edwards is now discussing cutting some of ASU’s 85 scholarship players:

“I told some guys who continue to stay in the training room, you’ve got no tape. I can’t grade you if you’re not on tape. All of a sudden, guys got well. It’s amazing. Sometimes these players think with 85 scholarships, I’m good. You’re not good. You’ve earned a scholarship because of your ability to be a student-athlete. It’s a combination of both. When you don’t meet that standard, there’s consequences. Consequences are sometimes tough. If I don’t apply those consequences, then I’m not doing my job as head coach.”

While the cut players would still have their scholarships to pursue their academic goals, Edwards’ comments are troublesome nonetheless.

Cutting players who have been injured playing for the Sun Devils seems especially harsh, and it’s not a good look for the NCAA amid controversies about whether players should be paid.
