Urban Meyer is now able to resume all of his coaching duties at Ohio State after missing the first three games of the season.

The Buckeyes were without their coach because of how he handled (or rather, mishandled) domestic violence allegations against former assistant Zach Smith. On Sunday morning’s SportsCenter, Meyer sat down to explain himself.

As you can see in the video below, shared by ESPN on YouTube, Tom Rinaldi grilled Meyer about the domestic-violence situation and ensuing decisions made by him:

“I can’t stand when I see it, I can’t stand when I hear (about domestic violence),” he said. “For anyone at this university to believe that Urban Meyer would turn his back on domestic violence, I need to leave. So it’s very clear my stance on domestic violence. I wasn’t suspended for that. I was suspended because I mismanaged a long-tenured employee and went too far to help him.”

He also explained why he hired Zach Smith at Ohio State after a 2009 incident at Florida:

“I wanted to have someone with familiarity with my offense,” he said. Zach was a guy who was doing very well. I did a background check with coaches he worked with and it came back with very high marks, so I made a decision to hire him. (It was) a bad decision.”

Meyer’s attempt at a redemption tour continues, but this whole situation still seems a bit slimy and disingenuous. However, he’s back at Ohio State and will be able to lead the team for the rest of the season.
