Thirty-six year-old Rob Mendez was born without any arms and legs, but he’s certainly overcome those obstacles to become an inspiring head high school football coach.

Last night, Mendez received the Jimmy V Award at the ESPYs. Mendez’s acceptance speech was incredible and too great not to share.

“The reality is I am here,” Mendez said when reflecting on his life and career. “And if there’s any message I want to give you guys tonight, it’s to look at me and see how much passion I put into coaching and how far it’s gotten me. When you dedicate yourself to something and open your mind to different possibilities and focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t do, you really can go places in this world.”

ESPN shared Mendez’s speech on YouTube:

Mendez is the head coach of the Prospect Panthers, a high school in Saratoga, California. ESPN aired an incredible feature on him earlier this year. You can watch it here.

When speaking backstage at the event Wednesday night, Mendez explained he got his passion for football from none other than Super Bowl winning QB Tom Brady.

“That’s where I got my passion for football, was from Tom Brady,” Mendez said. “How excited he gets on the sidelines and how he leads his troops and the other players, it’s just so inspiring to watch him on the sidelines get fired up. I love Tom Brady for that fire, that passion he has.”
