The college football world mourned Tuesday night when Purdue superfan Tyler Trent, who inspired many during his battle against cancer over the past few months, died at age 20.

He became a sensation after the Boilermakers’ huge upset of Ohio State in October and made appearances with several media outlets, including ESPN. Late-night SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt was clearly moved by the young man, and the show closed Tuesday night with a tear-jerking gesture just hours after Trent’s death.

“We were honored to have crossed paths with this young man, and we were all better for it,” Van Pelt said. “All impacted by his grace and his strength in the face of the fight.”

It’s a classy move from Van Pelt and the folks at SportsCenter, and the touching tribute was a fitting way to honor Trent’s legacy.
