David Carr was briefly a teammate of Lane Kiffin at Fresno State, and interestingly, it was Carr’s presence that kick-started Kiffin’s coaching career.

Carr recently told the story of how a fifth-year senior quarterback (Kiffin) lost playing time to a freshman (Carr) and that spelled the end of Kiffin’s playing days, and the beginning of his coaching tenure.

In a conversation with Watch Stadium, Carr recalled that they were also roommates once upon a time.

“Lane was great,” Carr said. “Lane was everything you’d expect.”

“I started taking reps from him in practice,” Carr said. “His last day as a Bulldog player was when he came out. We were supposed to be in full pads. He came out with shorts and a T-shirt on and Jeff Tedford says, ‘Lane, what are you doing.’ He’s like, ‘Well, I figured I’d come out here in shorts and a T-shirt because you’re just going to give all my reps to Dave.”

Carr went on to say that Kiffin left the field, but returned about 30 minutes later because his father, Monte, didn’t like how the previous exchange unfolded.

“Lane comes back out, in shorts and a T-shirt, and he is now the wide receivers assistant coach,” Carr said. “That’s how his coaching career began. That day.”
