The second week of the college football season gave us an even greater glimpse into what teams in the SEC and across the nation are really made of.

Some teams in the conference continued to show they might have what it takes to go all the way, while others suffered embarrassing losses and close calls.

Here’s a look at a few things that were overrated and underrated after the second week of the season:

OVERRATED

SEC’s demise: Sure, this wasn’t a great weekend for the conference. Arkansas had a humiliating loss to Toledo while Missouri and Auburn barely escaped similar fates and Tennessee blew an opportunity for a marquee victory against Oklahoma. But Texas A&M and Ole Miss continue to look really, really good. Alabama got the job done and Georgia and LSU look like contenders with hard-fought conference wins. And really, it only takes a couple of teams to solidify the conference’s reputation. If, say, Alabama stays near the top of the rankings all season then wins two games in the playoff the SEC is still the king.

Arkansas’ running game: You’d expect one of Bret Bielema’s teams to be able to pound the ball up and down the field at home against Toledo, but it was a real struggle. Alex Collins led the Razorbacks with 54 yards on 20 carries, but nearly half of that came on one run. For the rest of the day it was tough to get more than a yard or two per carry for any Arkansas back. Brandon Allen continues to look good at quarterback, but the Hogs have injuries at receiver and need to find a ground game.

Young talent: For all the underclassmen studs dotting the Tennessee lineup, there’s still plenty to be said for experience. The Volunteers perhaps weren’t quite ready for the big stage with the whole country anxiously watching as Oklahoma rallied and forced Saturday’s game into overtime. Tennessee is well on its way to rebuilding something great in Knoxville, but experience and poise in that kind of setting is something that only comes with time.

UNDERRATED

Texas A&M: Well, maybe not now, as the Aggies have climbed from unranked in the preseason to No. 17 in the latest AP poll, but Texas A&M is better than most people anticipated and it did slip a spot from No. 16 this week for some strange reason. The defensive line is dominant. Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray have one of the best wide receiver crews in the nation to throw to. Newcomers seem to have filled most of the glaring holes from last year’s team and it’s looking more and more like the Aggies could be Alabama’s top challenger in the SEC West.

Ole Miss’ defense: With the offense scoring more than 70 points per game and quarterback Chad Kelly a big story line for obvious reasons, the fact that the defense has also dominated has been overshadowed. The Rebels are tied for the SEC lead with four interceptions and three of them have been returned for touchdowns. Ole Miss also has more tackles in two games than anybody else in the conference. The competition certainly gets tougher with a trip to Alabama this weekend, but so far the Rebels defense has risen to the challenge.

Auburn: The Tigers should be embarrassed that it took a rally and overtime to beat Jacksonville State, but it’s over and Auburn won. Plenty of teams have struggled against inferior opponents and let it be a wakeup call. Auburn has an opportunity to do just that and pick up a big win against LSU this weekend. The Tigers are too talented and too well coached not to get their act together. As long as quarterback Jeremy Johnson improves, Auburn will be fine.
