A year ago, Dak Prescott led Mississippi State to its first win at LSU since 1991, a 34-29 victory in Death Valley. It’s time for the rematch, and here is what a few outlets are saying about the biggest SEC matchup of the week, Saturday night’s contest between the Tigers and Bulldogs in Starkville:

  1. The fact that LSU’s opener was canceled last week is a definite advantage for Mississippi State. As a matter of fact, the Bulldogs’ QB seems to think it is: “We got a chance to go out there and fix our wrinkles and kinks, knock some of the rust off, especially me and my passing performance,” Prescott told the Associated Press this week, after finishing 22 of 38 for 237 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 34-16 win over Southern Miss last Saturday. “We’ve got that stuff out of the way. We know what we’ve got and the people we can count on. I think it’s a whole lot better coming into a game like this.”
  2. Leonard Fournette is a bit of a mystery for Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs. “He is someone that is hard to prepare for because you don’t have a guy like him in practice,” the Mississippi State coach said this week about the LSU running back, who rushed just seven times for 38 yards in last year’s loss to Mississippi State, a game in which the Tigers had to scrap their running game after falling behind by 24 points. “If I don’t have a guy like him, it is hard for us to see the actual speed, size and physicality that he plays with. You just have to go get ready.” Fournette had two carries for 11 yards before last week’s opener against McNeese State was canceled due to excessive lightning.
  3. Prescott is just one of several Bulldogs the Tigers should keep their eye on. According to The Advocate, the list includes Mississippi State’s shortest player, 5-foot-8 Brandon Holloway, who had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week against Southern Miss.
  4. LSU will have to do a better job of tackling than it did in last year’s matchup. So says ESPN, which recounts Prescott’s performance last season in Baton Rouge, when he threw for 268 yards and two TDs, rushed for 105 and another score and helped the Bulldogs rack up 570 yards of offense in Mississippi  State’s 34-29 win over LSU.
  5. LSU’s wideouts are ready to take whatever Mississippi State’s defense will give them. The Bulldogs, behind returning defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, allowed Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens to complete 30 of his 44 passes for 311 yards in their win last week. According to nola.com,  it will be up to LSU QB Brandon Harris and his receiving corps to see if they can take advantage of Mississippi State’s secondary.
