Terrible news to share as North Texas signee Willie Simmons III was among the three victims of a recent Austin shooting.
The senior football player from Elgin High School was killed along with Elgin girls’ basketball player Alyssa Broderick according to ESPN.
Simmons was a two-time unanimous all-district selection and three-time academic all-district nominee.
He was rated as a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle and signed with North Texas over scholarship offers from Air Force, Lamar, Missouri State and New Mexico.
“We are heartbroken by the news of this senseless tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick,” Elgin ISD superintendent Jodi Duron said in a statement. “The Elgin ISD community grieves the loss of these two young, promising souls.”
Elgin High School paid tribute to Simmons and Broderick on Monday.
