The South Carolina Gamecocks were unable to pick up a win in the Duke’s Mayo Classic against the rival North Carolina Tar Heels. The team fell by a score of 31-17.

Spencer Rattler had a decent game, but the Gamecocks were unable to get anything going on the ground. The team finished with 8 rushing yards on the night, and suffered 9 sacks.

The Gamecocks should be able to get into the win column next week at home against Furman. Here are some of the takeaways from the defeat.

South Carolina’s rushing attack was anemic and concerning:

The Gamecocks were unable to get anything going all night against the Tar Heels. The team ended the night with just 8 rushing yards.

Dakereon Joyner took 12 attempts for just 22 yards. Juju McDowell had 5 carries for just -1 yard. Spencer Rattler technically carried the ball 13 times and ended with -11 yards.

This is obviously unsustainable and something the team will need to address. Spencer Rattler performed admirably, but no offense can work with just one facet functioning at a high level.

The offensive line got no push and South Carolina’s backs were constanly being hit as soon as they touched the ball. The game next week against Furman should be a get-right game for the unit.

Multiple injuries could have long-lasting effects:

The Gamecocks suffered multiple injuries in this game.

Defenders Mohamed Kaba and Nick Emmanwori went down in the 1st half while OL Cason Henry was rolled up on during a run play.

It is not yet known how serious these injuries are, but we should get updated on Monday or Tuesday.

Shane Beamer showed his creative side:

Beamer opened the 2nd half with a surprise onside kick. This caught the Tar Heels off guard and seemingly set the Gamecocks up in a great position.

Unfortunately, the offense stalled out and quickly had a 4th down. Then, the team went for it on 4th down and failed to convert.

The offense never got rolling in the 2nd half, but it was nice to see Beamer at least try something different.

The Gamecocks should be able to get into the win column next week at home against Furman.
