A scrimmage setting during fall camp is supremely valuable for any program.

For South Carolina, this live period of play gives established players a chance to work within the new scheme employed by head coach Will Muschamp. It also provides an opportunity for some of the younger players to showcase their proverbial talents.

Perhaps above all else, it may offer a glimpse into who’ll man the starting spot at quarterback for the Gamecocks heading into this year.

A scrimmage took place in Columbia this past Saturday. Hoping to gain some insight into which signal-caller will take the reins of the offense, Muschamp offered some thoughts (per The Big Spur) on the three challengers (Jake Bentley, Brandon McIlwain, Perry Orth).

“In the quarterback situation I thought all three guys did good things, extended drives, made the plays on third downs, took care of the ball. No one is head and shoulders above anybody right now.”

Orth — the experienced senior — is attempting to ward off advances from two upstart true freshmen in McIlwain and Bentley. It doesn’t appear that a timetable is in place when it comes to naming a starter. However, Muschamp would like to see some more consistency when it comes to executing on the field.

“We’ll continue to rep the way we’ve been repping and hopefully get this thing resolved before we kickoff on September 1. It’s a closely contested battle,” said Muschamp. “Certainly you would have liked someone to go out there and be error free, but we were not as error free as I would’ve liked at the position.”
