New South Carolina President Bob Caslen is touring the state to introduce himself to the area, and in the last week has recanted or corrected statements made to The Greenville News and Florence Morning News about coach Will Muschamp’s future.

The latest statement was issued after 10 p.m. on Monday night that said: “Let me set the record straight: Ray Tanner did not speak with anyone at Florida State University about coaching contracts.”

However, audio released Tuesday afternoon from that interview in Florence contradicts that statement and confirms earlier reporting by the paper. Earlier Tuesday, the Greenville paper released audio after Caslen said his words were “twisted” in the report that followed his interview there.

In Florence, Caslen was asked, “Speaking of which, have you talked to anyone at Florida State about how they manage an $18 million buyout?”

“No,” Caslen said on the recorded audio, “but our athletics director has.”

“They have a whole lot more money in their athletic endowment than we do.”

“I know that for a fact.”

“Listen, for the record, Muschamp is my coach, period. And he’ll remain my coach, just for the record. If you look at the athletic director’s statement (from Saturday), that’s the same that I endorse.”

Earlier this season, Florida State fired Willie Taggart. As the Gamecocks have stumbled to a 4-7 record, fans have also raised questions about Muschamp’s buyout being $19.4 million right now and $18.8 million after Dec. 31.

Caslen and AD Ray Tanner have issued multiple statements and given multiple interviews on radio and in person with beat writers to clarify their support of Muschamp.
