The outlook on Will Muschamp’s future at South Carolina is increasingly dismal following a 59-42 loss at Ole Miss for the Gamecocks’ third straight defeat to drop them to 2-5 on the season.

Coming off a 4-8 campaign in 2019, fan frustration is growing by the week as the one week where the Gamecocks had a solid showing was in the upset over Auburn. A victory over winless Vanderbilt was the only other positive showing.

On the latest episode of “The Audible” podcast with college football insiders Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, which was posted on Sunday, they discussed Muschamp’s future, and the state of the program.

“In any other year, Will Muschamp might have been fired this morning or this afternoon,” Mandel said, referring to what administrators might say. “He’s done. We’re not even going to wait until the end of the season. It’s not even certain that they actually will go through with firing him.”

Mandel also pointed out previous reports where Athletics Director Ray Tanner earlier this year reported that South Carolina projected a $58 million revenue gap because of the coronavirus pandemic. That makes it increasingly difficult to pay a $13.4 million buyout, though they admitted that all it takes is a few boosters.

Feldman replied, “Unless they show some real signs of optimism in the last stretch, I don’t know how they go on with Muschamp going forward. There’s a lot of skepticism about whether he can get it done as an SEC head coach and I’m not sure there’s enough reason now to be sold on him.”
