D.J. Swearinger considering unique Pro Bowl attire
All-star caliber players usually don’t last long as free agents, but D.J. Swearinger is in an unusual situation.
The Washington Redskins released Swearinger Monday after he criticized the team’s defensive coordinator in the press. Swearinger is a Pro Bowl alternate, meaning he could play in the game, without representing an NFL team. If that’s the case, Swearinger may rep his alma mater and sport the garnet and black.
Swearinger told 106.7 The Fan that he might wear a South Carolina uniform if he’s asked to play in the Pro Bowl and remains a free agent. Swearinger played at South Carolina from 2009-12, appearing in 52 games (33 starts), recording 244 tackles, six interceptions and three touchdowns in his Gamecocks career.
While there’s nothing new about former South Carolina players appearing in the Pro Bowl, seeing the Gamecocks uniform in an NFL all-star game could provide some great exposure for the program as it would certainly get some attention on the TV broadcast.
I am trying to say this with a straight face but only the #Redskins could be in a position to cut a Pro-Bowl alternate in Week 17. He just said on @1067theFan that if he plays in #NFL all-star game, he might wear South Carolina apparel, if not claimed.
