Desmond Umeozulu, a 4-star EDGE out of Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Charles Herbert Flowers), has announced a commitment to play in the SEC.

Umeozulu, a 6-foot-6 and 239-pounder, committed to South Carolina over the likes of Ohio State, North Carolina and Pitt. Umeozulu unveiled the news by revealing a cardboard cut out of a South Carolina player. He has a reported 36 offers, and is ranked the No. 20 EDGE player in the class of 2023, and the No. 3 player in the state of Maryland, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Sterling Lucas and Pete Lembo recruited Umeozulu to South Carolina. He’s the third-highest rated recruit in the class of 2023 for the Gamecocks, and the third player from Maryland or Washington, as the Gamecocks continue to find success recruiting the Mid-Atlantic. The Gamecocks now have 20 players in their recruiting class, and it’s ranked No. 15 overall.

Ideal frame to play edge in college with chance to add mass and strength and perhaps play defensive line. Can easily get to 240 pounds and has plus length. Plays mostly with hand on ground for Flowers but has some standup reps. Flashes twitch at snap and is able to stay low. Athleticism shines when coming off edge. Combination of length Plays attacking style and can re-direct along line of scrimmage. Possesses body control and closing speed to tackle in space. Has speed to chase down play from behind. Plays with energy and effort and has physical approach. Willing to work through double teams. Good change of direction for frame size. Shows an ability to uses hands effectively to keep offensive linemen from engaging. Technique of swim move displayed but continued development of moves and move sets are needed. Adding lower body flexibility will allow for more bend and help in getting around edge and being more impactful in winning leverage.
