South Carolina has no shortage of playmakers at wide receiver, but based on his performance in preseason camp, the Gamecocks may have one more.

Xavier Legette has caught the eye of quarterbacks Jake Bentley and Dakereon Joyner as his silver screen-type story adds another chapter. Legette, who came to the Gamecocks from a AA high school, is listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. Legette was lightly regarded in recruiting circles, and was later ranked the No. 11 player in the state of South Carolina, and No. 39 athlete in the 2019 class, according to the 247 Sports Composite.

His hometown of Mullins, S.C. has less than 5,000 people in it.

“As far as right now,” Bentley said on Friday, according to The Big Spur, “He’s been the biggest – not surprise, because when he got here this summer, we saw he had flashes of being pretty good, but to come in and make plays and make plays on the ball, he’s looked really good.

When the Gamecocks have been at their best over the years, they’ve had a fast and versatile player. Perhaps Legette is this year’s version of that kind of player.

“Very fast guy, one of the fastest guys on the team,” Joyner added. “He has an eye for the ball, he can go attack the ball.”
