Reports are circulating this weekend that Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer will be the next head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Beamer missed Oklahoma’s game against Baylor on Saturday night due to COVID-19 protocols, and now could be heading east to Columbia.

After Oklahoma’s 27-14 win over Baylor on Saturday night, head coach Lincoln Riley was asked about the Beamer rumors. He said he’s going to wait until he can talk to Beamer in person before he comments (via 247Sports):

“I’ll wait to talk to him first,” said Riley. “I mean, obviously he wasn’t available to coach for us tonight, so it’s not like I’ve been able to sit there and visit with him. But if it is true, certainly be thrilled for him. As I know, those are opportunities that you don’t always get. So if it is the case, it would be a great decision by South Carolina.”

Beamer has plenty of experience with the Gamecocks, having spent the 2007-2010 seasons as a member of Steve Spurrier’s coaching staff.

What Oklahoma will do to replace Beamer if and when the news becomes official remains to be seen. For now, though, it seems the Gamecocks are close to naming their new coach.
