Ray Tanner, South Carolina AD, receives contract extension
Ray Tanner will be with the Gamecocks a few more years as the South Carolina athletics director received a 2-year contract extension through 2026, the school announced. His previous contract was set to expire in June 2024.
While Tanner has been the AD, the Gamecocks have won national championships in equestrian (2014) and women’s basketball (2017, 2022), 17 SEC tournament and regular season championships. Also, every program during Tanner’s tenure has received a new or significantly upgraded practice or competition facility.
Tanner’s most recent high-profile decisions were the coaching transitions of Will Muschamp to Shane Beamer, and Frank Martin to Lamont Paris in football and men’s basketball.
The football team went 7-6 and 8-5 the last 2 seasons, with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win, and a Gator Bowl loss. The Gamecocks were ranked No. 23 in the final AP Top 25 poll, and are expected to be ranked this preseason.
Paris and the men’s basketball team finished 11-21 this past season after Martin coached the Gamecocks for 10 seasons.
Tanner was named AD in 2012 after 16 seasons as the Gamecocks’ baseball coach.

Oh for fvcks sake. I guess rising tide is gonna retire in the next couple of years with the wording of the contract.
Most Cock fans are no Tanner-fans. His wild contract extension/Buyout of Muschamp’s Contract cost the University greatly. His other hires have been equally unimpressive. He did not hire Dawn Staley, by the way. Tanner hired Shane Beamer because many former players called and recommended him, plus he hired him on the cheap($2.75 million/year initially). So what’s Tanner done on his own by using his brain ? Not much. Go Cocks ! But Tanner’s retirement will be good for the University.
The good ole boy system at SC is never going to die. Backslappin’ and hee-hawin’ will never lead to a successful program.
The Shane Beamer hire has basically saved his job as ALL Gamecocks fans were not happy at all with Tanner.
GO COCKS
Delk…Correct. I’ve been following closely the Cocks Athletic
Dept. for over 20 years and a good Athletic Director Tanner is not. A good baseball coach he is.
^^^Delk, exactly!^^^^^
Tanner has been in over his head since Pestidies gave him the AD job. I will never forget when spurrier was obviously no longer into it Tanner begged him back. This was before he actually quit. A seasoned AD would have orchestrated his retirement. Tanner and anyone else who signed off on hiring Muschamps should have been tossed out the door. This contract extension is ridiculous. ‘Oh but Tanner is our baseball God..we can’t treat him that way’..BS He quit being a baseball God when he became AD
