New South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer appears set to look to another familiar name to add to his staff.

According to multiple reports, Beamer will bring aboard former Florida cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray as his defensive backs coach. The news was first reported by AL.com’s Matt Zenitz.

Gray, a 20-year coaching veteran, was a 3-time All-Big East selection as a free safety for Virginia Tech, where he played for Shane Beamer’s father, Frank. Between 2006-2015, he was defensive backs coach under the elder Beamer, joined by the younger Beamer on the Hokies staff between 2011-2015.

Following his time on the sideline in Blacksburg, Gray coached defensive backs at Florida in 2016 before moving to the NFL to serve in the same position with Washington in 2017 and 2018. For the past 2 seasons, he was in Gainesville, coaching 1st-team All-SEC selection C.J. Henderson in 2019 and 2nd-team pick Kaiir Elam in 2020.

But he was fired on Jan. 1 as part of an overhaul of the Gators’ defensive staff following a combined 107 points allowed in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama and in the Cotton Bowl against Beamer’s last team, Oklahoma. Now, Beamer and Gray look to be reunited, this time in Columbia.
