Coming into the 2018-19 season, South Carolina F Justin Minaya was supposed to be a big part of the Gamecocks’ plans.
Sadly, the talented sophomore was injured before a game against Wofford and hasn’t been able to return to the court since.
Now, it appears his sophomore season is officially over, as The State reports that he is being shut down for the season after his injury has taken longer than expected to heal:
“He did not make the progress from a strength standpoint we thought he would make,” Frank Martin said.
Had Minaya played in any game post-Jan. 16, he would have forfeited his redshirt opportunity, according to NCAA rules.
The good news is that Minaya will be able to redshirt this season, meaning he’ll still have three years of eligibility remaining when he takes the court next fall.
In five games this season, Minaya averaged 7.4 points and 5.6 rebounds.
